Eagle Residence

“A home for retreat and relaxation that has a strong connection to the site and provides flexibility to suit our lifestyle.”

Client brief.

While a sloping site is commonly renowned for providing challenges it also demonstrates how a good design can embrace those challenges and create opportunities and solutions which otherwise may never have been realised.

A home that would be a peaceful retreat, connect them to their environment and make the most of a steep, south-facing site with southerly views brought the clients of this project to Jamison Architects.

The residence is perched midway up the hill with the most notable feature being the soaring roof that opens up southerly views of rolling green hills and valleys. The home is elongated and narrow so it simultaneously allows a northerly aspect to be had from the uphill side. The building form also facilitates a more usable, flat, terrace area on the north side whereby living spaces can spill outside. The ceiling line and soffit is also angled up on the north side allowing views up the hill and connection to the sky.

Essentially the home is divided into two zones that are separated by the arrival space with its inviting connection to the rear, landscaped, north terrace. Designed for a couple, the main zone includes the living spaces and a master bedroom suite which has the ability to be closed off from the less utilised secondary zone. This secondary zone encompasses two multi-purpose rooms or bedrooms and a bathroom for guests. A solid natural stone base anchors the house into the hillside while the floating roof has a thin, delicate, yet wing-like profile.
